Cutting Government Waste May 2012
Dear Friend,
A little over a month ago, the Conservative government introduced our budget for 2012. But this isn’t just a budget. It’s an important part of our philosophy of government – cutting wasteful spending and delivering value to Canadians.
Pennies cost more than one cent to make. And economists estimate that the total cost of having to handle them is a drag on our economy worth tens of millions of dollars. That’s why we’re phasing them out. It just doesn’t make any more sense to make any more cents.
Something else we’re changing that’s somewhat more symbolic, but important nonetheless – the Governor General is going to have to start paying income tax.
Lastly, there’s no reason to force companies to repeat the same environmental assessments federally as they already do for the Province. It costs the government more money and it costs businesses precious time. So we’re putting an end to it.
“One project, one review” means that we’re eliminating bureaucratic overlap. If a project has already passed an equivalent provincial test, we won’t need to repeat it from the Federal government.
Of course, there have been many more improvements such as these that were announced in our recent budget. I hope you’ll take a look if you’re interested!
As always, I hope you and your family enjoy the rest of this beautiful spring.
Warm regards,
- Merv

Paying His Excellency’s fair share:
Starting next year, the Governor General of Canada will have to pay income tax just like everybody else. It’s only fair.

Scrapping duplication of red-tape:
We’re going to streamline the review process for major economic projects with system-wide legislative improvements to the review process to establish clear timelines and reduce duplication and regulatory burdens.
