– The Governments of
Canada and Manitoba, and the City of Brandon today announced support to
help the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation strengthen economic
opportunities in Brandon.
"I am happy to announce support for affordable housing and energy
efficiency in Brandon," said MP Merv Tweed, on behalf of the Honourable
Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
"Our Government remains committed to improving affordable housing and
projects that bring positive results to our community."
Under this project, the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation
will expand services to meet the growing demand for water efficient
fixtures targeted at low-income housing and senior care homes in the
City of Brandon. Approximately 355 low-flow showerheads, toilets and
faucet aerators, under the Brandon Energy Efficiency Program (BEEP),
will be installed.
"The Province of Manitoba is pleased to support this innovative
initiative that retrofits lower-income households to reduce energy and
water bills, creating savings for Manitoba families," said Brandon East
MLA Drew Caldwell, on behalf of Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade
Minister Peter Bjornson.
Federal funding of $97,000 is being provided through the Community
Adjustment Fund (CAF), as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The
Province of Manitoba is providing $786,169 under three departments:
Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade; Science, Technology, Energy and
Mines; as well as the Water Stewardship Program. The City of Brandon is
providing $42,000 under the Economic Development Department’s affordable
housing portfolio.
"The City of Brandon’s investment in the Brandon Energy Efficiency
Program (BEEP) benefits the community in numerous ways including
reducing housing costs for low income wage earners, enhancing existing housing stock, greening the environment
through reduced water and energy consumption, strengthening the local
labour pool through retrofit training and mentorship as well as the
economic benefits directly resulting from the project’s payroll and
material purchases," shared Mayor Dave Burgess.
CAF will provide $306 million over two years to support the most
affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily
reliant on resource-based industries, for instance forestry, mining,
agriculture and fisheries, and communities that depend on the
manufacturing industry. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is
delivering the fund in the four western provinces.
