Funding for Cenotaph/Monument Restoration
Brandon, December 15, 2009 –
Merv Tweed, MP for Brandon-Souris announced $3,425 in Federal Government
support for the restoration of the Municipality of Killarney – Turtle
Mountain War Memorial.
“This
funding ensures that this memorial to our First and Second World War
heroes continues to be a lasting tribute to those who made the ultimate
sacrifice for our country,” said Tweed.
“Our Government’s commitment to the memory of Veterans continues
to be a top priority.”
The
War Memorial which is located in front of the municipal civic office was
originally built in 1926. Restoration will include rebuilding the base,
cleaning the stone surfaces, refurbishing the bronze plaque and
repainting the monument letters.
“It is
my hope that this restoration of the War Memorial will inspire a renewed
sense of remembrance of our history and pride in our Veterans within the
community of Killarney and area,” said Tweed.
