Repeal of ‘faint-hope clause’ would end early parole for murderers
BRANDON, April 22, 2010 — Merv Tweed,
M.P. for Brandon-Souris supports the introduction of a bill that would
ensure serious time is served for the most serious crimes. The
Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of
Canada, announced legislation to repeal the “faint-hope clause” that
allows murderers to obtain early parole.
“Our government is taking action to ensure
those convicted of serious crimes serve serious time,” said Tweed.
“The families of victims should never have to suffer the anguish of
attending repeated early parole eligibility hearings.”
Once this legislation comes into force,
offenders who commit murder will no longer be eligible for early parole
under the faint-hope regime and those who are currently serving their
life sentences or awaiting sentence will face tougher rules when they
apply.
