Tweed: “Railway safety a priority”

BRANDON: April 23, 2008 - Merv Tweed, MP for Brandon-Souris, was pleased today that the Government of Canada announced it will provide support for six safety improvement projects at railway crossings in Manitoba.

"Safe railway crossings are a priority for our Government," said Tweed. "In Manitoba this announcement provides over $970,000 for six projects that have been identified as needing safety upgrades, two of which are in Brandon-Souris."

Transport Canada works closely with railway companies and communities across the country to identify grade crossings that require safety improvements.

The improvements in Brandon-Souris are:

·        Provincial Highway 250 in the RM of Whitehead; lighting upgrade

·        Town of Virden at Lyons Street; addition of gates and warning device

“These two crossings have been identified as safety concerns,” said Tweed.  “I’m very pleased the Minister of Transport has released the funds necessary to make these railway-highway junctions safer for our citizens.”
