Governments Invest in the Town of Rivers
Recreational Infrastructure

Rivers, Manitoba - January 18, 2010 – The Town of Rivers is moving forward with the Riverdale Community Complex thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Merv Tweed, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Riverdale Community Complex that will create jobs in the Town of Rivers.

"The community has worked extremely hard for several years and I am pleased to be a part of this exciting project," said Merv Tweed, MP.  "The Riverdale Community Complex will be a facility to enjoy for many years to come."

Funding of $800,000 is provided through the RInC program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

“It is tremendous news that the Town of Rivers is receiving financial support from the RInC Fund,” said Al Morken, Mayor of the Town of Rivers. “This announcement towards building our new multi-use community complex will generate regional economic growth and job creation. It will provide recreational and healthy lifestyle opportunities for present and future generations.”

The new complex is replacing an existing arena that was built in 1948. It will meet the Canadian Green Building Council Requirements of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification.

The RInC program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.  A total of almost $153 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the program in the four western provinces.

Visit the RInC program in the West, or Canada's Economic Action Plan for more information.
