and hold Celebrations
(Brandon) December 4, 2009 –
Merv Tweed, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris is pleased to
announce the Government of Canada’s support for the Olympic Torch relay
to take place on January 8th and 9th in Virden.
“I am delighted that the schools of Virden
have been able to organize such an exciting event for the community,”
said Tweed. “The events and festivities being held in Virden are part of
a 45,000 km journey, the longest domestic Torch Relay in Olympic
history.”
“The entire Virden community will be catching
the Olympic spirit on January 8th and 9th as they
host a community wide Olympic Torch Celebration, “ said Principal Mark
Keown. “Students and staff will be participating in some Olympic events
and celebrations on Friday, January 8th, as they prepare for
the torch arrival as it will pass through Virden early Saturday morning.
There will be a community breakfast available after the torch has passed
Saturday enabling community members to gather and celebrate the event.
The momentum of the Olympics is certainly spreading as we approach the
world wide event.”
“The Olympic Torch Relay is a wonderful
opportunity for the people of Southwestern Manitoba to showcase our
culture, heritage, people and the distinct identity of this area to the
rest of Canada,“ noted Tweed.
