Tweed confident of support for Library Bill Brandon, October 3, 2007 - Merv Tweed, Member of Parliament for Brandon Souris is thrilled at the response he has had since the introduction of his Private Members Bill to protect the Library Book Rate available through Canada Post. “I have received letters of support and encouragement from across the country,” said Tweed. “Individuals, libraries, regional and provincial associations from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland have contacted me offering their support of my bill and are encouraging their local Members of Parliament to do the same.” Tweed said the bill will have a tremendous impact on all of Canada, especially rural Canada. Comments from his colleagues are positive and reassuring that the Bill should pass in the House when it comes up for a vote. Inquiries have asked if the Bill will survive should there be an election. “Private Members’ Bills stay on the order paper if Parliament dissolves for an election,” said Tweed. “When Parliament reconvenes, my bill will still be on the order paper.” “I encourage everyone to communicate with your local libraries and continue voicing your support for this bill,” said Tweed. “We must protect the Library Book Rate as it is an invaluable tool for our rural libraries.” BACKGROUND: Since 1939, libraries in Canada have been able to exchange books at a reduced postal rate, historically known as the Library Book Rate (LBR). Originally funded directly by the Government of Canada, a 1997 ruling by the World Trade Organization requires the cost of the program to be incurred by Canada Post. Canada Post has not guaranteed support past January 2008. Tweed’s bill will also expand the traditional book program to include non-print materials such as CDs and DVDs. |
