Investing in Our Northern Future
|
January 2010
|
|

|
|
Dear Constituent,
For the most part, this is looking like another typical Canadian
January - A cold one.
This month, I thought it would be appropriate to let you know a
little bit about what our government's been doing in Canada's
arctic region.
We're investing $10.9 million in expanding a key hub for
arctic research at Resolute Bay to improve our knowledge and
understanding of Northern regions. We're helping northern
communities develop adaptation plans to better understand and
plan for the impacts of possible climate change.
And we're improving our ability to defend our sovereignty
over our Northern territories by improving our Northern naval
capacity at Nanisivik.
I've included more information about these and more initiatives
below for you if you're interested.
I hope for the rest of the winter you and your family keep warm
and healthy (despite the weather).
Best regards,
- Merv

Building Up Canada's Arctic

Expanding Northern Research:
As part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, Stephen Harper's
government is enhancing crucial federal infrastructure in the
North. We're improving enhancing our internationally renowned
research facility in Resolute Bay by investing over $10.9
million to upgrade and expand it.

Investing in Green Projects in the North:
We're combining new scientific studies of the Arctic with
traditional knowledge to make sure Northern communities have the
information they need to adapt to potential climate change.
Climate change adaptation plans are being developed for Arviat
and Whale Cove as well as Kugluktuk and Cambridge Bay.

Improving Arctic Naval Infrastructure:
Highlighting our commitment of ensuring Canada's security and
exercising our sovereignty in the North, we're continuing to
modernize the Canadian Forces by preparing to construct new
naval infrastructure for the Nanisivik Naval Facility. This is a
part of our Canada First Defence Strategy to make sure
our Forces have the facilities they need to meet the challenges
of the 21st Century.
