| Harper Government Strengthens Our Democracy | September 2007 |

Dear Constituent, I hope you’re enjoying the beautiful weather and the seasons changing! In this issue of Staying Connected, I just wanted to share with you some of the advances our government has made in something that is of great interest to me – strengthening our democracy to make government more accountable. For years, Canadians have called for changes to make government more in touch with the average citizen. The most striking example of our out-of-touch democracy is the fact that Senators are appointed and serve until age 75 without ever having to seek election. In the last election, Prime Minister Harper promised to make our government more democratic. I’m pleased that we have already launched a number of policies that will positively change our democracy. Perhaps most important, we are requiring Senators to be elected by the people – and not appointed by the Prime Minister. Introducing Senate Elections To read Prime Minister Harper's speech on our commitment to Senate Reform - including requiring Senators be elected by the people and serve under fixed term limits - click here. Making Voting More Convenient The government has recently introduced the Expanded Voting Opportunities Bill, to create two additional advance polling days to give Canadian voters more time and easier access to the polls. For more details click here. Cracking Down on Voter Fraud We have introduced changes to the law that will require voters to provide photo identification at the polls, to crack down on illegal voting by non-citizens, underaged voters, and individuals who try to vote multiple times. For more information on the new law, click here. Fairness through Fixed Election Dates Instead of allowing the party in power to have an unfair advantage to call an election at any time, we are setting fixed election dates every four years in October.
