Dear Constituent, I've really been enjoying all of the buds, birds, blooms, (and even bugs) of Spring - and I'm sure you have been too! So I thought this month I'd let you know what our Conservative government has been doing for you to protect our environment. Please find below a few of the things we've been doing recently to help clean up the environment of our planet and protect it for future generations. But also I'd like to share some encouraging news. The latest data shows that Canada's greenhouse gas emissions actually declined in 2006. Click here for more information. I hope you really enjoy the rest of Spring - after this Winter we've certainly earned it. Best regards, - Merv |

Keeping Toxic Chemicals Out of the Ecosystem: Our government's Chemicals Management Plan is currently reviewing almost 200 chemical substances that haven't yet been assessed for their potential dangers to us and the environment. Where needed, we're putting tough restrictions on ones found to be bad polluters and toxic. For more detailed information - click here. Tough Standards for Smog-Causing Substances: Volatile Organic Compounds are the second biggest source of smog in Canada. These chemicals have a strong smell, evaporate quickly, and can be found in paint, varnish, and glue. Our government is taking action by putting in place some of the toughest concentration standards around on VOCs. For more detailed information - click here. Battling Climate Change with Clean Energy Technology: Earlier this year our government announced $125 million to advance carbon capture and storage technology, $15 million for new technologies to reduce the impact of the oil sands, and $5 million for the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy.
