Protecting Canada's Environment December 2009

Dear Constituent,

As we enter into the Christmas season and reflect on the blessings of the past year, I just wanted to share with you some of the ways our government is working to preserve our environment for future generations.

In the last month, Stephen Harper's government reached a new milestone to protect against the effects of harmful chemicals.

Also, we've begun a project to put new green technology in federal buildings, and announced new investments in environmental preparedness for northern communities.

I've included more information about these and more initiatives below for you if you're interested.

As always, if you have any questions or wish to share your thoughts, please never hesitate to get in touch with me.

Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas,

- Merv

Preserving our Ecosystems
Keeping harmful chemicals out of the environment:
Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq and Environment Minister Jim Prentice reached an important milestone in the fight to protect us from harmful chemicals.

14 out of the 18 chemicals being assessed in Batch 6 of the Chemical Management Plan have reached their final screening and assessment. This means better consumer and environmental protection from potentially harmful substances.

Smarter buildings, less waste:
Our Conservative government launched a new initiative to put innovative technologies in place in federal buildings to improve mechanical, heating, and lighting systems to reduce annual energy costs by up to 20%. Not only will his conserve energy, it will bring better value for your tax dollars.

Investing in Green Projects in our North:
We're investing $1.66 million this year to help northern communities cope with changing permafrost and sea level conditions. This will help create jobs in northern communities and help set them on a better footing for the future to better understand, plan for, and adapt to the impacts of the changing climate.
