More Accountability, More Democracy
|
May 2009

Dear Constituent,
With all the beautiful blooms and buds unfolding it's been great to spend time outside - especially on those really nice days.
Celebrating the end of Winter and the return of Spring is something that all Canadians can appreciate! This month I'd like to write about another thing we all appreciate often without even thinking about it - Democracy.
Prime Minister Harper is as committed as ever to improving both Democracy and Accountability.
For example, we're closing the loophole that currently lets wealthy donors break political donation limits by giving money as a 'loan'. Money simply should not be able to buy influence.
We're working towards giving you a say in who represents you in the Senate and keeping Senators accountable by introducing shortened terms of office.
If you have any questions or wish to share your thoughts, please never hesitate to get in touch with me.
All the best,
- Merv

Building a Stronger Federation

Giving you a say in the Senate: Earlier this year our Conservative government applauded the Manitoba government's consultations about senate elections and looks forward to continuing to work with like-minded provinces to create a more democratic Senate. Already, for example Prime Minister Harper has appointed a Senator elected in Alberta. For more detailed information - click here.
Closing Loopholes, Improving Accountability: Our government has introduced a bill to strengthen accountability with respect to political loans. This will ensure that loans meet the same high standards set by Stephen Harper's Accountability Act in 2006. It will establish a reporting regime, ban corporations (except banks) and unions from making loans, and include loans from individuals in the $1,100 contribution limit.
