More Democracy, More Accountability

June 2010

Dear Constituent,
Summer is right around the corner and if you're anything like
me, you'd probably rather be outside than sitting at a computer.
I'll try not to take up too much of your time, but I want to
talk briefly about something that I believe is very important -
Democracy.
Our Conservative government has been working towards making
Canada a more democratic country and making our
government more accountable to voters.
Some of the things we're working on is through new bills that
will close loopholes to stop the influence of money in
politics, give you more opportunity to vote in elections,
and bring democracy to our Senate.
As always, please feel free to get in touch with me if you have
any questions or need to share your thoughts or concerns.
Best wishes for a safe and happy Summer,
- Merv

Building up our Democracy
|
|
Closing political loopholes:
Our government has introduced a bill to strengthen
accountability with respect to political loans. This will ensure
that loans meet the same high standards set by Stephen Harper's
Accountability Act in 2006. It will establish a reporting
regime, ban corporations (except banks) and unions from making
loans, and include loans from individuals in the $1,100
contribution limit.

Making voting easier:
The Increasing Voter Participation Act will increase the
number of days you are able to vote during an election. Giving
you more opportunity to vote will give all Canadians greater
flexibility to find the time to participate in our Democracy by
expressing themselves in the election of Members of Parliament.

Bringing Democracy to Canada's Senate:
Canadians deserve a modern, accountable, elected Senate and our
Conservative government is committed to delivering just that.
The Senatorial Selection Act will establish a framework
for provinces to implement democratic processes where voters
will choose their Senators - not politicians.
